Issue II – POETIC SYSTEMS – Klara du Plessis

#RasiqraRemixed is a living, multi-stage, mixed media, modular interactive poetry generator. Both the Sound and Performance stages currently centre on my triolet poem “Believe It or Not!” (Cephalopography 2.0, Wolsak & Wynn, 2020). I have divided this poem into 15 unique utterances, which I’ve then recorded as samples in my Teenage Engineering Pocket Operator PO-35 vocal synthesizer.

In the Sound stage, the PO-35 is displayed with diagrams, supplemental instructions on how to trigger the samples, and two sets of headphones to allow multiple gallery visitors to simultaneously experiment with re-creating “Believe It or Not!” or creating new poetry together.

In the Performance stage, the synthesizer is operated by a volunteer audience member while I perform spontaneous sound poetry augmented by live vocal effects processing, guided by prompts from both the volunteer’s improvisations and from Cephalopography 2.0.

The repetitive, interlocking rhythms of the triolet and the poetic themes of death, decay, and grief are key to the reproduction, deconstruction, remixing, and re-creation of this poetic system.
